With only 3 days to go until our return to Indiana, the students are completing their final purchases for gifts, having final dinners with their host families and their relatives and hopefully starting to pack. The students have had a busy month and have encountered some interesting events. The H1N1 flu virus just appeared in Costa Rica and caused a threat within the last few weeks (after our arrival) and it caused all of the schools in Costa Rica to postpone the students’ return to school for an additional week. There was a lot of flooding that when compounded with the remnants of a large earthquake in January caused some some routes to certain destinations difficult to reach. The students have been real troopers and have handled the changes with maturity!

If you want an adventure like theirs (I obviously cannot guarantee any natural disasters, now would I want to), please consider joining us in July 2010. Year #5 will be the best one yet! Students from all over Indiana and Ohio have joined us so far and they were committed to speaking Spanish for the 4 weeks of the trip! If you want to go on a zip line canopy tour, go rafting in an awesome river, see some lusch greenery and an amazing volcano and have a second family who loves you, please consider joining us in 2010. Feel free to post any questions/comments here on the blog or send me an e-mail. Official sign ups will begin in September 2009. We’d love to have any dedicated Spanish students aboard. (Two years of Spanish are required before departure).

Applications have been rolling in and more are on their way for July 2008. Any eligible student is welcome to join us on this trip until we reach our max number of students (40) or until April 30th. (An eligible student is any student who will have completed Spanish II by May 2008, is in good standing at their school, will have a positive reference from their Spanish teacher and be willing to commit to 4 weeks of speaking only Spanish!) After January 1st, 2008 airfare costs and getting booked on the same flight as the group can’t be guaranteed but I’ll do everything I can to work it out for you! We have students coming from all parts of Indiana (from Gary to Lawrenceburg)!

Don’t forget to apply for your passport in January or as soon as you can! Immunizations should be started right away as well! If you have any questions or would like to be a part of such an exciting and life-changing trip, please contact me at JWoerner@smadison.k12.in.us or feel free to post your questions/comments on this site.
