I would love for all of the students who attended the Costa Rica study abroad program in July 2006 to upload their favorite memory &/or photo.

  1. Oh how i love being the first to comment! Well i went to Costa Rica n July 2006 and it was a great experience and helped me prepare for my current exchange trip to Chile for six months… it was a great way to get a frist hand look at the language and the culture of an AMAZING country! We went to school everyday and took amazing trips on the weekends! My trip was really bittersweet but i wouldnt trade it for anything…. but i do have some suggestions for those going…
    1. Dont spend $500 in four weeks! be conscious of how much you are spending!
    2. Dont call home often… you are only going for four weeks… enjoy it away from your family!! :)
    3. Speak Spanish! enough said!
please email and let me know if you have any questions!

  2. I had the time of my life! There are so many different customs and lifestyles to get used to, but every experience and adventure is worth it WITHOUT a doubt. I reccomend going into everything with an open mind, and be willing to try many new things (food and activities). You’ll have no fun if you sit back and do nothing. You have to make yourself a part of the fun and want to be involved in whatever you can to immerse yourself in the language! Hopefully we get to play futbol in the rain…because that was probably in the top 2 of my favorite times in Costa Rica ‘06.

  3. Most amazing experience of my whole life. I’ll admit I was kind of nervous at first but the second I got to my family and into their house I felt like I was already part of their family. It was the best thing I ever decided to do. I never felt unsafe or scared at all! School was great and you learn more than you think you will! Like Callie said, Go with an open mind.. you have to be open to new things, but if you aren’t i’m sure you will be once you get there. Don’t think you’re going to miss anything in Indy because i mean come one what really goes on here? but I highly highly recommend going and I wouldn’t give up my trip for ANYTHING!

My family was absolutely amazing and welcomed me with open arms.It was amazing to spend weekends in cloud forests, by volcanoes, or on the beach!Im so excited to go back this July!I would reccomend this trip to anyone because i really had the time of my life!

  5. i really like the trip to Costa Rica last year. Before i went, i thought that since Costa Rica was located on the equator, that it would be extremely hot. I was wrong. Each day the temerature is in the 70s and also it rains atleast once every two days so pack an umbrella. The comments above me pretty sum up all that happen in Costa Rica. I have no doubt that you guys will have fun. Try to spend as much time as you can with your host family and getting to know them and what they like.

  6. All of the above. The families are very nice as well as the staff. As most of you know, I had my birthday when I was over there. The staff and my family were very supportive. As Patrice said, spend as much time with your family as you can. I don’t know how many people there are from other schools and how many other schools are going, but many of you will still see each other back home anyway. I mean, do spend time with friends, but make sure your not just leaving your family hanging all of the time. I got very close to some of my family members and learned a lot about them. It was kind of surprising. You learn their oppinions on different issues, which is sometimes very enlightening. Even doing simple things with your family is rewarding. For example, I played a WHOLE lot of pool when I was over there which brought me closer to my brother and sister. I also made bracelets with my younger sister.
Also, as Callie kind of mentioned, have a positive outgoing attitude. For example, get into the futbol games, don’t just stand there. Everything is so much more fun when you get into it, even if you think it’s stupid.
Also, maybe tell your parents that you may not be calling them that much. I couldn’t bear to call my parents even once through the entire trip (except when I got there to let them know I was ok). My mom got a little miffed that I didn’t call her at all. I did email her though. I recommend email, it brings up less home-sickness.
Last thing for now, I promise. The first day may be VERY difficult. But it only gets better from there. This trip is what you make of it. I had an amazing time. I learned so much, not just Spanish. Everything is so beautiful and awesome. Just let loose, have fun, and experience la pura vida!
